My First Ever Blog!

Let me start by saying that this is my first ever blog and I am definitely taking the trial by fire approach. I will apologize ahead of time for the many mistakes I am sure to make. I am quite certain though, that my wonderful students will be quick to point those mistakes out to me. I have had this idea for some time now, and I originally had planned on using Myspace or Facebook to publish my blog. I was directed to this website by our technology coordinator and I believe it will be much better than my original plan. My goal is to create meaningful discussions among my students and I hope that this will be an avenue that promotes this discussion. I believe we make our best decisions when we utilize a number of different opinions and make an informed choice. That being said, I appreciate any ideas you may have to make this more effective. The spring term students will be utilized as my experimental learners (not guinea pigs because apparently that offends Javan). I hope you all will give me honest, critical feedback on ways to make this thing work! So, let's begin with what I spoke about in class today. I talked about seeing things from different perspectives and the importance of gathering information before we make decisions. I also spoke about disagreement and how compromise quite often leads to better results than doing things on your own. I closed by discussing my feelings about people who are indifferent (don't really care) concerning the many problems we face today. I want to know how you feel on this subject (indifference). Am I just completely and totally wrong? Is it alright to be indifferent about big issues? Shouldn't we all (at least those who utilize their right to vote) be informed about the major concerns in this country before we make decisions? What about the war in Iraq? Is it ok for someone to simply not care about what is going on there? Whether you agree or disagree with what I said in class, let me know how you feel about some of these questions.

I agree espcially the fact that we should care about what is going on in Iraq. Whatever your beliefs you should research and stand up for those beliefs. Because it will affect you eventually. You may know someone who has served recently in Iraq or Afganistan and you may not know anyone,But eventually you will. It could be your children and you will definetly care then; just ask my mother. The main thing is research and know what you are talking about and be passionate about the things you believe. Walt Whitman is my favorite poet and he said and I quote "You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look through the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books, You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me, You shall listen to all sides and filter them from yourself." People, family, friends, and teachers will influence you throughout life, but when it is all said and done it is your life. Live it and be passionate about life. I leave you with one more quote Jackie Robinson (first black man to play Major League Baseball) said "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives..." Make a difference; and you can't make a difference by sitting on the fence.

I agree. I believe people should be informed and make decisions accordingly. Many people choose not to care when things begin, and then jump in when things get shaky. Many of the people who urged for the war in iraq now don't want to be there. If you are going to do something, see it through! If you don't have enough information to start with, don't agree to do anything. Go Cubs!

first, take that picture off. If your not gonna call me a pig, you cant put a pic of me on here.

I think anyone who don't care about the war in irag should be SHUNNED from our country. These are not people dying from deadly diseases that can't be prevented. They are people who are volenteering there lifes to protect us and are country. Not to mention they are leaving there wives/husbands of so many years and kids to maybe die for people the don't even know. So yea your probally thinking well don't volenteer. ok, well don't go to work today. then wat happens kids don't learn, banks shut down, no cure for diseases aren't discovered and if they don't go to war then 9/11 happends everyday. You choose to do your job and they choose to do theres, but they have a chance of loosing there life to better yours. so you better care what they are doing for you because of them you are having the american dream. first of all, there weren't as many grammar mistakes as i had anticipated. second of all, you must be talking about a different class because that is totally not what you talked about to us today. and third of all, i don't think indifference is an actual opinion on something. i think that it's just a way to describe a feeling you can't explain or don't want to deal with. if people are indifferent, the reality is probably just that they are ignorant, therefore inadequate, or that they feel forced to decide and are afraid of being bold. sometimes pressures or not totally agreeing with any one thing that has been said before will inhibit the person to truly saying what they think, so they will respond indifferent. i don't really think that made sense, but...oh well. you get the point.

I agree with you Choach Ramsey! Indifference and apathy towards political issues in this country is a rampant problem. It is not okay! This is a democratic country and we are given the right to vote. We decide what the government is and we should inform ourselves about the issues and exercise the
right to vote. Information is easily acessible and if one has half a brain then media bias can be picked out and one can form their own opinion. We are fourtunate to have the right to vote unlike other places in the world where the freedom is repressed, and not using it is a tragedy. It is also bad for one not to care about the War in Iraq because it affects our everyday lives. The War in Iraq is unnecessary. It is very costly on the economy and has contributed to our recession. It has also helped to raise gas prices. We have also created more terrorism because insurgents have been flocked there to fight. It is also difficult to fight because insurgents blend into the population and are hard to catch.

Sorry it took me so long to approve these comments! I've been in Chattanooga with softball and I just now read the most recent posts. I am encouraged by the response I have received thus far and I hope that this turns out to be a useful forum. Remember, I want both positive and negative feedback. Keep it up!

umm people should definately care! if no one cared about what was going on in this country it would be a total disaster... and i agree with you about how we should all be informed about concerns before we make decisions. otherwise we would probably be making stupid decisions, ones worse than we already make.

Well, I definately agree with what you said in class, for someone to be indifferent about an issue is to not make a difference. Although being indifferent about an issue isn't necessarily being wrong, to me it seems to be worse than being wrong because it shows that you dont have an opinion, you dont care, and that your unimportant to your society. If people dont have enough time to express their opinions upon issues AND back up their feelings, they shouldn't have any reason to complain.

indifference is definitely an emotion i readily associate myself with, but i do my best to refrain from associating with it when it comes to pressing issues(i.e. iraq, etc.). i do think it rather odd to mention compromise and indifference in the same discussion, but i guess it some form or fashion it works. In any case, when it comes to big, important decisions, it is ideal to be precise with thoughts and opinions, even if they clash, or if you're not so prideful about them. Getting even one opinion out on a big opinion is a big part of reaching a final decision, or a compromise.

Ignorance is spreading faster than STD's in this country.

I wish I could put it into words how i truly feel about this, and i wrote a long response but when I clicked to create a blogger identity, the entire thing got erased! ARGHHHH! Gah I'm so pissed off right now..

let me put it bluntly without sugar-coating:

War: We've been there too long and haven't got done what we've needed to get done. Democracy cannot be coercively pressed upon a nation that sure as hell(pardon my french) doesn't want it.

Hillary: Hate her

Obama: Scares me..but not as bad as his spiritual mentor.

Liberal platform in general: Pacifism in a war on terror...simply terrifying. Oh the Irony

John McCain: The man with the Plan

indifference. what a word. the way i see it is a lot of people use the word "indifference" as a substitute for "ignorance." for example, say people are terribly uninformed about the war because they are not aware of what is really happening (which is, i believe, the case with most people now-a-days because unless you have been there in the midst of cross fire you really have no idea). People choose not to be opinionated because they are ignorant of the realites of recent happenings (i am most definitely not suggesting that i know, because i fall quite firmly in that catergory of the "ignorant")

so in short:
indifference=ignorance

I believe we are through in Iraq and should pull out immediately. Dont get me wrong, i am a patriot and i do support our troops. The point i am trying to make is that we have accomplished our task in Iraq which was to bring "Iraqi Freedom" and that is all we need to do. To stay longer is unfathamable because eventually another dictator will take over and there is nothing we can do about that. My point is Bring our Troops Home!

okay so the issues and my opinions
disagrement: compromise can be good,if there is a middle ground that is better than wither side can do on there own but often times there is sum1 that is more right, and a lot of there opinions that could really help not just agreeing so everyone gets there way gets lost to the politics of being fair, compromise is a cop out for the loser.

indiffrence: i think that no one is really indiffrent on subjects and i dont think indiffrent is a substitute for the word ignorance, i think it is a substitute for being fed up and not wanting to piss america off. being indiffrent on what is happening in iraq doesnt exsist , but we are fighting a war that we can not and will not win, Terrorism is not defined by borders or countries, or evil dictators. Terrorism will be around as long as man is around, and has been since the beginning of time, and invading a country that i have yet to see one weapon of mass destrustion come out of is wrong, INDIFFRENT people are the ones who wont say that we WERE WRONG b/c they are "supporting our troups" i support our troups by praying b/c GOd is all that can help them now.

The Vote: utilizing americas vote is important , if you have the right and live in a pioneer country for tis way of government like americans do you should vote, for it is one way for ur vote to be heard.

I agree that people should have an opinion on what is going on in the world today. Without an opinion, people are just ignorant. Discussion and debate are extremely important. In order to have discussions and debates, people need to have different opinions, which is good.
I also agree that information should be gathered and carefully analyzed before a decision is made. This is especially important when dealing with foreign issues. We can't have a president that wants to jump to war on any little threat. The president needs to consider his OR HER options. However, the ability to declare war rests in the hands of the Congress, not the President. So, technically, the President can't jump to declare war...which is good!
Compromise is also very important. As we learned today, decisions are less likely to be made if people don't agree to compromise. The game we played in econ with the wheat sales also comes to mind. The buyers had to go higher and the sellers had to go lower.
I think that if people are going to vote, they need to be well informed. They shouldn't just vote based on their party. They also shouldn't vote based on a limb.
My opinion on the war in Iraq is that we should not be there. There is no reason for us to be in Iraq anymore and we should never have gone there in the first place. We have no right to barge into another country and take it over. The US thinks it's the king of the world. Well, we're not, and we need to get over that idea.

I believe that indifference is the safest and most annoying to others approach to making decisions. It is impossible to not have some form of an opinion on every issue, whether is is very weak to very strong. I think that indecisiveness comes in when people have very weak opinions and are afraid to voice anything. This personally annoys me. Just give me something to work with.

I believe that in certain cases indifference can be a way of getting things accomplished or making a group decision. However, when it comes to politics and the War in Iraq everyone must voice their opinion. I personally think that many positives have been accomplished in Iraq. Terrorism has seemed to have been put into the back of out minds right now. I also believe that it is time to start some sort of withdrawal process. We have been there long enough and hopefully we can bring the troops home safely.
